Rui CarmoActiveSync is the original denomination for the Pocket PC synchronization protocol, which has since evolved into something that was originally called AirSync, and which is now the core of Microsoft’s push-email offering.
Modern ActiveSync can be thought of (and is not completely unlike) WebDAV access to an Exchange server store (originally via a set of modified Outlook Web Access components), and has absolutely nothing to do with SyncML.
It is usually SSL-wrapped, supports keep-alive (or, more recently, SMS triggers for syncing), and has recently been licensed (directly or indirectly) by traditional” handset vendors such as “Nokia and SonyEricsson for inclusion in their business devices.
